Castel dell'Ovo
The Castel is located in a panoramic position along the Naples seafront.
The best way to reach the "Castel dell’Ovo" directly from the airport or the central station is by taxi. Convenient predetermined taxi fares have been fixed in agreement between taxi companies and municipality. You should ask the taxi driver to apply the predetermined fare suited to your case, when you get on board the taxi. The "Castel dell’Ovo" is in a walking distance from a number of hotels in the areas of Via Partenope, Chiaia and Santa Lucia. From hotels in other areas, the "Castel dell’Ovo" can be reached by public transportation.
The museum of Castel dell' Ovo, situated in one of the many beautiful areas of the city, is fascinating not only because of the historical memory it evokes but also for its particular natural beauty.
It stands on a tufo island partly under the sea and connected to the mainland by a bridge which leads straight into Via Partenope, the beautiful promenade where the most luxurious hotels in the city are situated.
From the terraces of the Castle you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the coast, which offers tourists a unique panorama of the city.
The Castel dell' Ovo, therefore, is not only a charming tourist place but also the ideal environment for the organization of conferences and important exhibitions, thanks to the beauty of the surroundings and its easy-to-reach location.
Castel dell' Ovo stands on the islet of Megaride. According to one of the most fanciful Neapolitan legends, the name of this castle derives from the egg that the Latin poet Virgil apparently hid in a cage placed in the dungeons of the castle. The egg was locked up and kept hidden because "the fortune of the Sea Castle depended on that egg".
Since then, the destiny of that castle has been in parallel with the fate of that egg. Chronicles report that, during queen Anne's reign, the castle was heavily damaged when the hump-backed bridge connecting the two rocks the castle was built on collapsed, thus obliging queen Anne to reveal she had made sure the egg would be replaced so as not to spread panic among her subjects who feared further troubles and disasters.
